Top Tips for your Practical Driving Test
Before booking your test
-
Make sure you’ve passed your theory test (required before the practical).
-
Double-check your provisional licence is valid and up to date.
On the road practice
-
Get plenty of experience in different conditions (day/night, wet/dry, busy/quiet roads).
-
Practise independent driving using road signs or sat nav, as this is part of the test.
-
Be confident with manoeuvres: bay parking, parallel parking, pulling up on the right, and emergency stops.
-
Work on smooth use of clutch control, gears, and signalling.
Test-Day Readiness
-
Bring your provisional licence and theory test pass certificate.
-
Arrive at the test centre at least 10 minutes early.
-
Be comfortable reading a number plate from 20 metres away (the eyesight check).
-
Stay calm — remember, the test is about showing you’re safe and consistent, not perfect.
Mindset & Habits
-
Keep checking mirrors regularly and act on what you see.
-
Show good hazard perception — anticipate problems early.
-
Drive with confidence, but not overconfidence.
-
Practise keeping nerves in check with deep breathing or positive routines.
Top Tips for your Theory Test
If you struggle with the stress of examinations, we can absolutely support you through this with specific lessons based on driving theory. In the mean time, here's JustDrive's tips to passing first time:
Get to Know the Test
-
The test has two parts: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception.
-
You must pass both parts to get your certificate.
Study Smart
-
Use the official Highway Code, DVSA theory test app, and practice papers.
-
Revise traffic signs, road markings, and speed limits carefully.
-
Focus on rules around vulnerable road users (cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists).
Hazard Perception
-
Practise spotting developing hazards early (e.g., a car about to pull out).
-
Remember: you need to click as the hazard develops, not too early or too late.
-
Use online practice clips to build confidence.
On Test Day
-
Take your provisional licence photocard with you (no licence = no test).
-
Arrive early to avoid stress.
-
Read each question carefully — don’t rush.
-
Flag tricky questions and return to them later.
Mindset & Preparation
-
Build up study over time — short, regular sessions work better than cramming.
-
Practise under test-like conditions to get used to timing.
-
Stay calm, pace yourself, and trust your preparation.
